Electrode Coating Functions

Coating of electrode performs following functions:-

  1. Provides gas to shield the arc and prevents excessive atmospheric contamination of the molten metal.
  2. Provides a means of cleaning the base metal just prior to deposition of the weld metal.
  3. Provides scavengers, deoxidizers, and fluxing agents to clean the weld and prevents excessive grain growth in the weld metal.
  4. Establishes the electrical characteristics of the electrode.
  5. Provides a slag blanket to protect the hot weld metal from the air and enhance the mechanical properties, bead shape etc.
  6. Provides a means of adding alloying elements to change the mechanical properties of the weld metal.
